Entrevista com Axel " Ironfinger" Ritt do Grave Digger

"Nós somos o Grave Digger, e se alguém tem permissão para fazer coisas assim, somos nós."

    O guitarrista alemão Axel Ritt da cidade de Colônia integra o Grave Digger desde 2009 e gravou com a banda os excelentes álbuns The Clans Will Rise Again ( 2010 ), Clash Of The Gods ( 2012 ), Return Of The Reaper ( 2014 ), Healed By Metal ( 2017 ) e o recente The Living Dead ( 2018 ), antes disso passou pelo Monstergroove e Domain.

    Nesta entrevista exclusiva ao Rock On Stage, o atencioso Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt conversou com o repórter Fernando R. R. Júnior sobre o novo trabalho do Grave Digger, o álbum The Living Dead e suas músicas, a turnê no Brasil em abril e a indústria da música, além de algumas outras curiosidades. Confira... 

Rock On Stage: Como foi o processo de composição do álbum The Living Dead? O seriado Walking Dead foi uma inspiração? E como tem sido a recepção dos fãs e da crítica com The Living Dead ?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Oi Fernando, aqui é Axel Ritt, guitarrista do Grave Digger. Definitivamente é um desenvolvimento para a banda. Nós nunca tivemos partes tão complexas em nossas músicas com relação a instrumentos e vocais, por exemplo, Chris ( Boltendahl ) canta alguns vocais harmônicos de três notas no começo de Shadow Of The Warrior, algo que ele nunca fez antes.

    O trabalho de guitarra tem uma abordagem harmônica incrível e as linhas de baixo nunca foram tão sofisticadas antes. Não, nunca vimos um único episódio da série de TV.

Rock On Stage: Neste álbum The Living Dead, vocês voltaram a trabalhar com Jörg Umbreit, que já produziu os álbuns como "The Last Supper", "Ballad Of Mary" e "Clash Of The Gods", entre outros, quais os motivos que levaram à sua escolha novamente?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Sim, Jörg co-produziu, acho que todos os álbuns dos últimos 25 anos. Temos o triunvirato de produtores Boltendahl / Ritt / Umbreit, que funcionou muito bem na última década.

Rock On Stage: A canção 'Zombie Dance' é surpreendente ao misturar "Polka" com Heavy Metal em uma parceria com o Russkaja, além de conter um clima festivo, porém, em seu clipe vemos a parte trágica que uma invasão de zumbis acarreta, conte-nos mais sobre a música e seu clipe.
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: A reação tem sido a de "melhor música de Grave Digger" até "nós odiamos Zombie Dance mais do que tudo" ( risos ). Mas foi uma grande diversão para todos, especialmente, durante as gravações do videoclipe. Nós somos o Grave Digger, e se alguém tem permissão para fazer coisas assim, somos nós.

Rock On Stage: 'The Power Of Metal' é um ótimo título para uma música e a sua letra também é motivante e mostra que o estilo Heavy Metal de ser é o mesmo em todo o mundo. Conte-nos mais sobre sua criação e as ideias contidas em sua letra.
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Esta música foi recomposta por duas vezes. A ideia original tem estado longe da música, que encontrou o caminho para o álbum. Foi mais como uma balada. Para ser honesto, eu amo muito o refrão, muito forte, mas mesmo que eu compus a música, o riff principal só foi usado porque Chris amava muito esse riff. Eu não estou satisfeito com isso, eu acho poderia ter sido melhor.

Rock On Stage: Quais as expectativas da banda para este novo giro pela América do Sul e em especial, para as datas no Brasil. Aliás, são duas datas no estado de São Paulo, sendo uma na capital e outra no interior na cidade de Limeira, a qual vocês já estiveram outras duas vezes, te pergunto quais lembranças você guarda dos shows por lá?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Estamos muito felizes em voltar para a América do Sul novamente. Especialmente no Brasil que tem sido uma ótima plataforma para nós há muitas décadas. Nós amamos isso! Os fãs são únicos!

Rock On Stage: Neste admirável mundo novo em que os fãs se preocupam mais em filmar o show do que agitar e que a indústria musical está se transformando rapidamente, como manter a banda sempre evidência?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Bem, nós somos os últimos dinossauros em uma indústria moribunda, mas, temos a sorte de ser um dos originais, alguns nos chamam de lendas. Continuaremos nos divertindo, contanto que as pessoas estejam dispostas a pagar por nossos shows e álbuns.

Rock On Stage: Como vocês escolhem o set list dos shows, pois, a cada álbum novas canções empolgantes surgem e como resgatam aquelas que vocês gostam, os fãs também, mas, que por conta de um novo lançamento ela acabou 'necessitando' sair do set. Como harmonizar as escolhas?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Nunca nos cansaremos de tocar os clássicos,  mesmo que nós 'caiamos fora do campeonato', estamos felizes em nos apresentar agora. Nós sempre fazemos uma boa mistura de algo antigo, algo novo e algo inesperado.

Rock On Stage: Agradeço pela entrevista, para fechar peço-lhe para deixar suas considerações finais e também um convite para os fãs brasileiros que estarão nos shows da Tour Of The Living Dead.

Rock On Stage: How was the process of composing the album The Living Dead? Was the Walking Dead series an inspiration? And what has been the reception of fans and criticism with The Living Dead?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Hi Fernando, this is Axel Ritt, guitarist of Grave Digger. It’s definitely a development for the band. We never had such complex parts in our songs regarding instruments and vocals, for example Chris sings some 3-note harmony vocals at the beginning of Shadow Of The Warrior', something he never did before.

    The guitar work got an awesome harmonic approach and the bass lines have never been that sophisticated before. No, we never saw a single episode of the TV-series.

Rock On Stage: In The Living Dead album, you have returned to work with Jorg Umbreit, who has produced the albums like "The Last Supper", "Ballad Of Mary" and "Clash Of The Gods", among others, which led to his choose again
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Yes, Jörg co-produced I guess all albums of the last 25 years. We do have the producer triumvirate Boltendahl / Ritt / Umbreit, which works very successful in the last decade.

Rock On Stage: The song Zombie Dance is surprising to mix "Polka" with Heavy Metal in a partnership with Russkaja, besides containing a festive atmosphere, but in its clip we see the tragic part that a zombie invasion entails, tell us more about the music and its clip.
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: The reaction have been from "best Grave Digger song ever" up to "we hate 'Zombie Dance' more than everything else“ ;-). But it was a great fun for everybody, especially while the recordings of the video clip. We are Grave Digger, if somebody has the permission to do stuff like that, that we have.

Rock On Stage:The Power Of Metal is a great title for a song and its lyrics are also motivating and shows that the Heavy Metal style of being is the same all over the world. Tell us more about your creation and the ideas contained in your letter.
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: This song has been recomposed for 2 times. The original idea has been far away from the song, that has found it’s way to the album. It was more like a ballad. To be honest, I love the chorus hook a lot, a very strong one, but even that I composed the song, the main riff only has been used, because Chris loved that riff that much. I’m not satisfied with it, I could have been done better.

Rock On Stage: What are the expectations of the band for this new tour in South America and especially for the dates in Brazil. In fact, there are two in the state of São Paulo, one in the capital and another in the interior of the city of Limeira, which you have been to two other times, I ask you which memories you keep from the shows there?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: We’re very happy to return to South America one again. Especially Brazil has been a great platform for us for so many decades now. We love it! The fans are unique!

Rock On Stage: In this brave new world where fans are more concerned with filming the show than shaking and the music industry is changing rapidly, how do you keep the band always in evidence?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: Well, we are the last dinosaurs in a dying industry, but we’re lucky to be one of the originals, some call it legends. We’ll keep on performing our asses off, as long as the people are willing to pay money for our shows and albums.

Rock On Stage: As you choose the set list of the shows, because each album new exciting songs appear and how they rescue those you like, the fans too, but that on account of a new release she ended up 'needing' to leave the set. How to harmonize choices?
Axel "Ironfinger" Ritt: We’ll never get tired of playing the classics, because they kicked us in the league, we’re happy to perform in now. We always do a good mixture of something old, something new and something unexpected.

Rock On Stage: Thank you for the interview, to close I ask you to leave your final considerations and also an invitation for the Brazilian fans who will be in the shows of Tour Of The Living Dead.
