Entrevista com Michael Romeo do Symphony X

"A criatividade, para mim, vai longe, eu amo música...ouvindo, assim como escrevendo. Trabalhar em um novo álbum sempre é emocionante, mas também desafiador."

    O guitarrista Michael Romeo fundou o Symphony X em Nova Jérsei nos Estados Unidos em 1994 e rapidamente se tornou um dos nomes mais importantes do Prog Metal mundial ao lado de Dream Theater, Queensryche, Opeth, Tool, Fates Warning e tantos outros. Nos 25 anos de atividades eles lançaram nove álbuns de estúdio, que lhes renderam várias turnês mundiais e algumas passagens pelo Brasil.

    A atual turnê Odissey Through the Underworld, que conta com duas apresentações no Brasil no início de agosto, sendo uma em São Paulo/SP e outra em Limeira/SP conta com músicas de todos os tempos de carreira e inclusive algumas surpresas para os fãs.

    Aproveitando esta oportunidade, Fernando R. R. Júnior do Rock On Stage conversou com o guitarrista Michael Romeo sobre este novo giro, álbuns favoritos do Symphony X, novas composições, a indústria da música e muito mais, confira:

Rock On Stage: Nesta tour "Odissey Through The Underworld" é uma comemoração de 25 anos da banda ou ainda não foi se pensado nisso?
Michael Romeo: Estamos discutindo nossos planos para o próximo ano, e uma 'turnê de aniversário de 25 anos' é algo que estamos pensando, mas esta turnê não é realmente isso. Nós tínhamos tirado um tempo e só queríamos voltar a tocar, então fizemos algumas turnês.

    Nós não queríamos que isso fosse uma continuação da turnê Underworld, já que muito tempo se passou desde o lançamento daquele álbum. Então montamos um setlist que tinha um pouco de tudo. Uma ou duas músicas de álbuns diferentes ao longo dos anos. Alguns favoritos dos fãs, bem como alguns dos nossos próprios.

Rock On Stage: Dos nove álbuns de estúdio produzidos pelo Symphony X, qual é o seu favorito e por que?
Michael Romeo: Pessoalmente, para mim é uma batalha entre Iconoclast e Underworld. Eu gosto da abordagem pesada e agressiva do Iconoclast, mas, o Underworld tem um mistura muito legal de todas as coisas pesadas, progressivas e melódicas.

Rock On Stage: Quais músicas não podem faltar no set da "Odissey Throught The Underworld"? Teremos surpresas que podem ser adicionadas? Nesta tour pode ocorrer o lançamento de algum álbum ao vivo ou teremos um novo álbum de estúdio?
Michael Romeo: Normalmente, todas as turnês que realizamos giraram em torno do último lançamento, na maioria do tempo é basicamente as novas músicas. Mas, desta vez o foco é diferente, como disse, decidimos fazer uma ou duas músicas de álbuns diferentes.

    Nós sempre recebíamos pedidos para se tocar The Odissey e nós não tocávamos isso há muito tempo, então, obviamente decidimos inseri-la no set. Além disso, terá algumas músicas do Underworld assim como do The Odyssey.

Rock On Stage: O último álbum de estúdio lançado em 2015 'Underworld'  é inspirado na Divina Comédia de Dante Alighieri na parte do Inferno. Você pensa em registrar um álbum futuro nas outras partes de acordo com o autor italiano? A propósito, vocês já estão preparando um novo álbum de estúdio?
Michael Romeo: Nós temos falado sobre nossos planos futuros e um novo álbum é definitivamente algo que está nos nossos planos.

Rock On Stage: Já são quase 20 anos de Symphony X, qual é o segredo para permanecerem juntos e tão criativos?
Michael Romeo: Tivemos a sorte de manter esta formação juntas por algum tempo, e nós ainda somos todos amigos, e isso ajuda. A criatividade, para mim, vai longe, eu amo música...ouvindo, assim como escrevendo. Trabalhar em um novo álbum sempre é emocionante, mas também desafiador. Mas, é isso que é o legal! É diferente a cada vez e aí que você tenta sempre ser criativo e dizer algo com a música.

Rock On Stage: As transformações na indústria da música como ( streaming, mp3, downloads ilegais e legais ) e a baixa venda de cd`s estão meio que forçando as bandas a continuarem mais tempo na estrada, mas também ao mesmo tempo essa tecnologia facilita o contato dos fãs com a banda. Como é viver harmonicamente nestes tempos e manter a banda ativa?
Michael Romeo: A indústria está em lugar bem fodido agora! Esses serviços de downloads de streaming ilegal e legal tem sido um desastre para os artistas. É difícil para os músicos sobreviverem. Embora seja conveniente ter "todas as músicas a qualquer hora e em qualquer lugar", os músicos fazem sucesso. Como artista eu sei que uma banda vai ganhar mais dinheiro com a 'venda física' de um cd.

    Então, quando uma banda ou artista que eu gosto lança novas músicas eu vou sempre comprar o cd. Eu sei que com isso vai ajudar a banda ou o artista que eu gosto e permitir que eles proporcionem mais músicas no futuro. Infelizmente, as pessoas não compram mais 'músicas', que acaba tornando a criação de músicas novas e de qualidade mais difíceis em termos de tempo e dinheiro.

Rock On Stage: É Michael... eu também gosto de comprar o material físico das bandas e artistas que sou fã sempre que posso.

Rock On Stage: Se discute muito que o Rock vai morrer, e embora acredito que a renovação seja um pouco difícil, vez ou outra aparece um bom nome como foi o caso do Greta Van Fleet, e acredito que enquanto se puder plugar uma guitarra, um baixo e uma bateria, aliadas à um bom vocalista, a chama continuará acesa. Para vocês, teremos no futuro nomes que consigam ter uma longa carreira de sucesso como o Symphony X? E existe alguma banda de Prog Metal que tenha chegado até vocês que poderia nos indicar?
Michael Romeo: Eu não acho que isso irá ocorrer, mas, as coisas continuarão mais difíceis para as bandas. Eu não consigo pensar em nenhuma banda nova que será o "próximo" Sabbath ou Slayer ou Rush, etc. pelo menos no nível que essas bandas alcançaram. As coisas andam difíceis no mundo do Rock / Metal e como disse anteriormente a música está em um lugar fodido agora.

    Com a forma como a música é consumida nos dias de hoje, é muito difícil para os músicos sobreviverem financeiramente, especialmente, os caras que estão começando, ou seja essas bandas mais novas. As pessoas simplesmente não compram mais música, então criar boas músicas.. o que demanda tempo e dinheiro... está mais difícil de se fazer hoje.

Rock On Stage: Is this tour "Odissey Through the Underworld" a celebration for 25 years of band or have not you thought about it yet?
Michael Romeo: We are discussing our plans for next year, and a '25 year anniversary tour' is something we are thinking about, but this upcoming tour is not really that. We had taken some time off, and just wanted to get back to playing, so we lined up a few tours.

    We didn't want this to be a continuation of the Underworld tour, as too much time had passed since the release of that album. So we put together a setlist that had a little bit of everything. A song or two from different albums over the years. Some fan favorites, as well as a few of our own.

Rock On Stage: Of the nine studio albums of Symphony X which is your favorite and why?
Michael Romeo: For me personally, its a toss-up between Iconoclast' and Underworld. I really like the heavy and aggressive appproach of Iconoclast, but Underworld has a cool mix of all the things we've done. It's a good combination of the heavy stuff, the progressive stuff, and melodic stuff.

Rock On Stage: What songs can not miss on the set of "Odissey Through the Underworld" and we will have surprises that can be added? And can you leave a live album of this tour or will we have a new studio record?
Michael Romeo: Usually, every tour we've done revolved around the latest release, so most of the time, the setlist is mostly the new songs. This time was different, and, like I said,... we decided to do a song or two from many different albums.

    We always get alot of requests to play The Odyssey, and we hadn't played that one in a while, so that ended up in the set. So, obviously there will be a few songs from Underworld, as well as The Odyssey.

Rock On Stage:The last studio of 2015, the Underworld that is inspired in 'The Divine Comedy' of Dante Alighieri in the part of Hell, you think to register a future album in the other parts according to the Italian author? By the way, are you already preparing a new studio album?
Michael Romeo: We've been talking about our future plans and a new album is definetly something we are discussing.

Rock On Stage:  It's almost 20 years since this Symphony X lineup, what's the secret to staying together and creative?
Michael Romeo: We've been fortunate enough to hold it together for quite some time. We are all still friends, so that helps. As far as creativity, for me, I still love music... listening, as well as writing. Working on a new album is always an exciting, yet challenging thing.

    But that's what cool about it. It's different every time, so you always try to be creative and say something with the music.

Rock On Stage:  Music industry transformations ( with streaming, mp3, illegal and legal downloading services ) and low cd sales are pushing the bands to stay on the road longer, and at the same time, technology facilitates fan contact with band. How to live harmonically in these times and keep the band active?
Michael Romeo: The industry is in a fucked up place now. These streaming, illegal and legal downloading services, have been a financially disaster for artists. It is hard for musicians to survive. Although, it is very convenient to have 'every song at anytime and anywhere', the musicians are taking a hit.

    As an artist, I know a band will see more money with the 'physical sale' of a cd.. so when a band or artist I like releases new music, I will ALWAYS buy the cd. I know it will help out the band or artist that I like and enable them provide more good music in the future. Unfortunaletly, people just don't 'buy' music anymore, which makes creating new quality music more and more difficult in terms of time and money.

Rock On Stage: So Michael ... I also like to buy the physical stuff from bands and artists that I am a fan of whenever I can.

Rock On Stage: It is much discussed that the Rock is going to die, and although I believe that the renovation is a little difficult, sometimes a good name appears as was the case of Greta Van Fleet, and I believe that while you can plug a guitar, a bass and a drums, allied to a good vocalist, the flame will remain on. For you, will we in the future have names that have a long and successful career like Symphony X? And is there any Prog Metal band that has come to you that you could tell us?
Michael Romeo: I don't think it will ever die, but things will continue to become more and more difficult for bands. I can't think of any new bands that will be the 'next' Sabbath, or Slayer, or Rush, etc.. atleast at the level of what those bands achieved.

    Things are tough in the rock and metal world... and, like I said, the music business is in a fucked up place now. With the way music is consumed these days, it is very hard for musicians to survive finacially, especially the guys just starting out. People just don't buy music anymore, so creating good music... which takes time and money... is just harder to do these days.

Rock On Stage: Thanks for the interview, to close I ask you to leave your final considerations and also an invitation for Brazilian fans who will be in the shows.
