Entrevista com a vocalista Leather Leone

    "Eu amo o Brasil e espero voltar este ano."   

    A simpática, elétrica e excelente vocalista de Heavy Metal Leather Leone que já esteve à frente do Chastian e que lançou no final de novembro de 2022 o seu terceiro álbum solo intitulado We Are The Chosen concedeu uma entrevista exclusiva ao repórter Fernando R. R. Júnior do Rock On Stage para comentar sobre este disco, algumas curiosidades da sua carreira e outros temas.

    E embora seja uma coincidência e não tenha sido planejado, esta entrevista se tornou uma homenagem à todas as mulheres que curtem Rock e Heavy Metal no Brasil e no mundo por ter sido publicada no dia 08 de março de 2023. Confira os detalhes nas linhas abaixo:

Rock On Stage: Olá Leather tudo bem? É uma grande honra estar realizando esta entrevista com você. Para começar te peço para nos dizer como que a música e em especial, o Heavy Metal chegaram até você e quais músicos e musicistas te inspiraram a se tornar uma vocalista de Heavy Metal?
Leather Leone: Oi... o prazer é meu...

    Cresci no meio da música com minha família sempre tocando vários tipos de música... fui a uma Igreja Católica que tinha um coral muito moderno.

    Boston, Foghat, REO Speedwagon... Não entrei no Metal até me mudar para São Francisco em 1982. Descobri Dio e o conheci... Eu tinha encontrado o meu caminho vocal!

Rock On Stage: Conte-nos de como era a cena Heavy Metal dos anos 80 nos tempos da Rude Girl e como era ser uma frontwoman no Heavy Metal nesta época. Hoje em dia você sente que é diferente ou tem mais liberdade e como você analisa a presença das mulheres no Rock e Heavy Metal?
Leather Leone: Os anos 80 foram um tempo livre e louco para se expressar. Era uma grande atmosfera familiar, não como hoje.

    Eu realmente não presto atenção ou analiso a presença de ser mulher no Metal. Eu apenas faço o meu trabalho... para criar e ser a melhor vocalista que posso ser. A questão de gênero é muito chata para mim.

Rock On Stage: Leather, apresente para os fãs o recém-lançado álbum We Are The Chosen. Em que aspectos você sente que ele superou o anterior II, quais são as suas canções favoritas e quais você percebe que causarão um impacto maior nos fãs? Aliás, como tem sido a recepção deles ( fãs ) e da crítica com este novo trabalho?
Leather Leone: Leather II foi muito apressado. Muitas emoções malucas e incorretas na época. Foi uma oportunidade que surgiu e eu aproveitei.

    We Are The Chosen foi muito mais pensado, às vezes penso demais. Mas, estou orgulhosa das músicas, principalmente, feliz com o resultado. Aprendi muito e vou aplicar no próximo disco. Todos vocês ( fãs ) foram extremamente receptivos.

    Agradeço a vocês. Minha música favorita era Off With Your Head, mas como a vida ela muda…Agora depende do dia…

Rock On Stage: Como funciona para você a composição das músicas e como as ideias surgem? Inclusive, como foi a We Are The Chosen no Hertz Studios na Polônia com a mixagem de Woitek e Slawek Wieslawski? Como foi trabalhar com estes profissionais e porque da escolha deles?
Leather Leone: Eu tenho ideias assim como Vinnie. Trocamos ideias e partimos daí. Inicialmente tínhamos o mesmo objetivo, veremos no futuro. Escolhi os estúdios da Hertz porque tinha refeito alguns vocais para Leather II lá e me senti em casa imediatamente.

    O estúdio Hertz exala Metal. Ele vaza pelas paredes. Não me sinto muito em casa, mas fui acolhida e apreciada lá. Eles são da família e foram de extrema ajuda na criação da minha visão.

Rock On Stage: Qual o significado da capa de We Are The Chosen feita pelo brasileiro Marcelo Vasco e porque a escolha da faixa título para o primeiro videoclipe? ( Aliás, belas locações ).
Leather Leone: Conheci Marcelo e seu trabalho através de Vinnie Tex. Eu compartilhei algumas fotos e perguntei se ele poderia criar uma capa clássica de fantasia do Metal para mim... Ele me surpreendeu.

    We Are The Chosen parecia a direção e a mensagem que eu queria. Quando estávamos escrevendo a música, Vinnie e eu simplesmente sentimos que era a certa.

Rock  On Stage: Vou pedir para comentar a parceria com Vinnie Tex neste disco We Are The Chosen e também sobre como é fazer parte do cast da SPV Steamhammer Records, a sua nova gravadora.
Leather Leone: Minha parceria com Vinnie Tex é desafiadora, somos duas pessoas extremamente diferentes, com gostos musicais diferentes e moramos em dois países diferentes, mas damos um jeito.

Rock On Stage: Boa parte da sua vida musical foi no Chastian, que boas lembranças de shows, da estrada ou de álbuns que você guarda na memória e nunca foram contadas? Aproveito e lhe pergunto também quais lembranças você tem da última passagem no Brasil em 2019?
Leather Leone: Minhas memórias de todas as minhas experiências musicais não têm preço e estão guardadas em minha mente.

    Só posso dizer que gosto e quero continuar em turnê como e com quem for meu objetivo. Eu amo o Brasil e espero voltar este ano.

Rock On Stage: Depois do primeiro álbum solo "Shock Waves", você saiu da cena musical e só voltou praticamente mais de 20 anos depois. Li que o retorno só aconteceu depois que  o ícone e sensacional Ronnie James Dio nos deixou. Fale-nos mais sobre o que fez neste período e como foi esta volta aos palcos e aos estúdios?
Leather Leone: Sim, infelizmente a perda de Ronnie me 'chutou na bunda' para fazer o que me foi dado o dom de fazer. Meu retorno foi uma batalha difícil que continuarei a conquistar.

    Fazer música que todos vocês ainda ouvem é um presente incrível que eu não considero levianamente. Veremos o que o futuro reserva.

Rock On Stage: Durante a pandemia, o que mais senti falta foram os shows de Rock e Heavy Metal, e você Leather, o que mais sentiu falta e porque? Ainda neste tema, como a pandemia te afetou e como tem sido sua retomada de trabalhos?
Leather Leone: Sim, foi uma merda. Perdi uma turnê pelos Estados Unidos e, como todo mundo, prendi a respiração.

    Mas dito isso me deu tempo para criar We Are The Chosen. Não sou uma pessoa paciente então a pandemia me obrigou a demorar com o disco.

Rock On Stage: Quais cuidados você tem para manter sua voz sempre poderosa como está explicito em We Are The Chosen?
Leather Leone: Cuido do coração, sono, água e canto em volume baixo... E eu não faço nada disso religiosamente. É um presente que recebi dos deuses…lol

Rock On Stage: Novamente obrigado pela entrevista, parabéns pelo Dia Internacional da Mulher. Adorei seu show em Limeira e a sua presença de palco. Deixo o espaço para suas considerações finais e uma última questão: para quando será seu retorno no Brasil?
Leather Leone: Muito obrigado por sua crença e gentileza. Estou trabalhando para voltar ao Brasil este ano. Vou mantê-los informados.

Rock On Stage: Hello Leather, how are you? It is a great honor to be conducting this interview with you. To begin with, I ask you to tell us how music, and in particular, Heavy Metal, came to you and which musicians and musicians inspired you to become a Heavy Metal vocalist?
Leather Leone: Hey…My pleasure.

    I grew up around music with my family always playing many types of music…I went to catholic church which had a very hip choir.

    Growing up in upstate NY where there were cows than people, I was into all the arena rock of the 70’s. Boston, Foghat, REO Speedwagon…

    I didn’t get into Metal until I moved to San Francisco in 1982. I discovered Dio and met him….I had found my vocal way!

Rock On Stage: Tell us about the Heavy Metal scene in the 80's in Rude Girl's times and what it was like to be a frontwoman in Heavy Metal at that time. Nowadays do you feel that you are different or have more freedom and how do you analyze the presence of women in Rock and Heavy Metal?
Leather Leone: The 80’s were a free crazy express yourself time. It was a big family atmosphere, not like today.

    I don’t really pay attention or analyze the presence of being a woman in Metal. I just do my job…to create and be the best vocalist I can be. The gender issue is very boring to me.

Rock On Stage: Leather, present to the fans the recently released album We Are The Chosen. In what ways do you feel it surpassed the previous II, what are your favorite songs and which ones do you feel will make the biggest impact on fans? By the way, how has their reception (fans) and the critics been with this new work?
Leather Leone: Leather II was very rushed. Lots of crazy incorrect emotions at the time.

    It was an opportunity that came to me, and I took advantage of it. We Are The Chosen was much more thought out, sometimes I think too much.

    But I am proud of the songs, mostly happy with the outcome. I learned a lot and will apply it to the next record.

    All of you have been extremely responsive... I thank you. My favorite song was “Off with your head”, but like life it changes… Now it depends on the day…

Rock On Stage: How does songwriting work for you and how do ideas come up? Also, how was We Are The Chosen at Hertz Studios in Poland with Woitek and Slawek Wieslawski mixing? What was it like working with these professionals and why did you choose them?
Leather Leone: I come up with ideas as does Vinnie. We exchange ideas and take it from there.

    We initially had the same goal, we will see in the future. I chose Hertz Studios because I had re done some vocals for Leather II there and felt at home immediately.

    Hertz studio’s exudes Metal. It seeps out of the walls. I don’t feel at home much, but I was welcomed and appreciated there. They are family and were of extreme help in creating my vision.

Rock On Stage: What is the meaning of the cover of We Are The Chosen made by the Brazilian Marcelo Vasco and why the choice of the title track for the first videoclip? ( By the way, beautiful locations ).
Leather Leone: I had been introduced to Marcelo and his work through Vinnie Tex.

    I shared some pictures and asked if he could create a Metal fantasy classic cover for me…He blew my mind.

    We Are The Chosen just seemed the direction and message I wanted. When we were writing the song Vinnie and I just felt it was right.

Rock On Stage: I'll ask you to comment on the partnership with Vinnie Tex on this album "We Are The Chosen" and also on what it's like to be part of the cast of SPV Steamhammer Records, your new label.
Leather Leone: My partnership with Vinnie Tex is challenging, we are two extremely different people with different musical tastes and we live in two different countries, but we figure it out.

Rock On Stage: A good part of your musical life was at Chastian, what good memories of concerts, the road or albums do you keep in your memory and have never been told? I take the opportunity and also ask you what memories do you have of the last trip to Brazil in 2019?
Leather Leone: My memories of all my musical experiences are priceless and locked away in my mind.

    I can only say I enjoy and want to continue to tour however and with whomever is my goal. I love Brasil and hope to be back this year.

Rock On Stage: After the first solo album "Shock Waves", you left the music scene and only came back almost 20 years later. I read that the return only happened after the iconic and sensational Ronnie James Dio left us. Tell us more about what you did during this period and how was this return to the stages and studios?
Leather Leone: Yes , unfortunately the loss of Ronnie kicked me in the ass to do what I had been given the gift to do.

    My return has been an uphill battle that I will continue to conquer. Making music that all of you still listen to is an amazing gift that I do not take lightly. We will see what the future holds.

Rock On Stage: During the pandemic, what I missed the most were the Rock and Heavy Metal concerts, and you Leather, what did you miss the most and why? Still on this topic, how did the pandemic affect you and how has your work resumed?
Leather Leone: Yes. it sucked. I lost a tour of the states and like everyone else I just held my breath.

    But that being said It gave me time to creates We Are The Chosen I am not a patient person so the pandemic forced me to take my time with the record.

Rock On Stage: What care do you have to keep your voice always powerful as it is explicit in We Are The Chosen?
Leather Leone: Cardio, sleep, water and low volume singing…And I don’t do any of these religiously. I’ts a gift I have received from the gods…lol

Rock On Stage: Thanks again for the interview, congratulations on International Women's Day. I loved your show in Limeira and your stage presence. I leave space for your final considerations and one last question: when will you return to Brazil?
Leather Leone: Thank you so much for your belief and kindness.

    I am working on returning to Brasil this year. I will keep you posted.
